Indie band the Mynabirds making waves (sound waves, maybe?) with their sophomore album Generals.
If you haven’t heard about them, you should get to know The Mynabirds. They are a group of musicians fronted by singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn. Burhenn, originally apart of the indie-rock band Georgie James, began writing for The Mynabirds three years ago. Their debut album, What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood, was written in the mountains of Oregon by Burhenn alongside producer Richard Swift — and, it was widely acknowledged by critics. It showcased a unique sound… A marriage of classical, indie, and garage inspirations. In the 2010 breakthrough album, she sings: “It’s hard to know when you’re in it / If its head or it’s tails / If we won or if we failed / Oh, we’ll wait and see.†She communicates an admirable vulnerability that sounds natural, and sings with soul and sincerity. The Mynabirds’ sophomore album, Generals, was recently released on June 5 and is another collaboration with Swift. This release is not a coin toss, and we’re sure it will continue to be a successful album filled with character and conviction as time rolls on.  — Emily Marucci

OK. So, lots of things have changed these days in the Hip Hop / Rap scene. Even with Lil’ Wayne dressing like an 8th grader who carries around his skateboard (because that’s what the cool kids are doing) or Kanye who continues to borrow his sista’s pants, there’s always been one thing we could count on from our gangster ass rappers, and that is… When someones got beef, the shits gonna’ pop off and somebody is getting fucked up! Not their most recent track, but these lyrics can translate to multiple “this crazy thing we call life” moments… making it’s a hard song to quit playing on your Spotify. In case you missed the dynamic duo with the occasional accompanying vocal provided by the lady croonstress Jess, on their most recent North American tour, have no fear. Nikki Lane just released this video for “Lies,” directed by Jared Eberhard, off her continuously climbing debut album Walk of Shame. We love Nikki for her trendy-country sound, raspy/soothing voice and her traveling boutique (seriously, go watch her play and you will discover some amazing vintage finds).

WHY: A cockroach was left on my doorstep as a Valentines day present.
This Cardigans’ track from 1996 popped into my head this morning. Maybe it was because we all started “Spotifying” Whitney Houston tracks this weekend, my particular go to was “How do I Know”, but the nostalgia of my youth was calling to me. I remember hanging Leonardo DiCaprio poster tear outs on my wall daydreaming about our forbidden and love listening to the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack as a 13 year girl. Gucci Mane is back.
Obviously, 2011 wasn’t a great year for Atlanta’s beloved Gucci Mane, especially since he threw some lady out of a (moving) car for denying prostitution, spent time behind bars and found himself in and out of psychiatric homes. But, luckily for everyone, he has persevered. His latest mixtape, Trap Back, which features the likes of 2 Chainz, Yo Gotti, Jadakiss, Rocko, Future, Waka Flocka Flame and some other guys, was released on Super Bowl Sunday and after some listening… we’re convinced we like it. — Rachel Eleanor Sutton

WHY: This band has member whiplash—and also, because TEED is an acronym for Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs & we love anything Dinosaur remixed.
This track “It’s My Part†will be the B-side off of Jonquil’s upcoming limited edition single released on 10†yellow vinyl (Blessing Force). The band was originally a six piece, but then half the members up’d and left. So, they became a trio… then a quad-band. Changes all around! Anyways, their latest record Point of Go is better than anything before so the lineup change resulted as a good thing after all (sigh of relief). The album is slated for release on February 21st—and shhhhhh—it’s playing on Spotify. — Rachel Eleanor Sutton

This video for “Mayday,†which premiered on Rolling Stone yesterday and is directed by Jo McCaughey, is a montage of friendly game playing against an upbeat pop song—quite a good fit, if we might add. Not sure when anyone would listen to this song other than during times such as these. “Mayday†is the first track off the  Nashville-based singer/songwriter’s debut Nasty, Brutish, And Short (and yes, the A in And is supposed to be capitalized) via Saddle Creek.
